Hey Coaches,
We are preparing for our seasons and getting ready to play our first game. My first game in California is Nov. 14.
I am currently incorporating our drive concepts into our program, and today I would like to discuss the mistakes I have made in the past while installing the Dribble Drive Motion Offense.
First mistake: Teaching the drop zone kick-up first
The first thing you need to teach on offense is for players to have an attacking mentality. So, why are we teaching our players to pick up the ball at the elbow instead of getting to the basket?
Second Mistake: Soley relying on the Daily 45 Drills
In 2008, when I began running, I relied solely on the Daily 45 drills for the first four years. These drills helped me develop an aggressive mindset, but they lacked certain elements. Layup drills were practiced without any defensive opposition, and the Blood drills didn't include the opposite slot. Consequently, if we didn't engage in 5-on-5 practice, we didn't have sufficient opportunities to learn how to make reads for players executing a pass and cut, creating gaps, or making cuts themselves.
Third Mistake: Not teaching the offense out of transition first
I initially taught it as a half-court offense, without incorporating the transition and seamless flow into and out of transition.
Fourth mistake: Not having players play all spots
Because we played numerous blood drills, I assigned my players to specific positions such as attackers, shooters, and posts. Unfortunately, this prevented me from adequately developing their skills to create a positionless offense, which requires them to play all roles during practices.
Fifth Mistake: Didn’t play enough
We didn't play enough. This offense focuses on making good decisions when picking up drives - whether to score or pass. I used too many 3-0 and 5-0 situations to teach them about drop, drag, and rack zone reads, but it didn't help them understand how to execute it against the defense. The blood drills were insufficient.
I did a clinic this week on Installing the Dribble Drive Motion Offense it was well attended but some people wanted to attend, so I have made a replay available to watch free of charge through Sunday night.
Watch the video below to see the clinic where I discuss my installation process, provide helpful drills for installation, and present a 10-day installation plan.
