Layering your actions
I am in the middle of a deep dive of the NBA specifically the Utah Jazz. Coach Quin Snyder does an excellent job each year with running great actions for his players. He really does a great job of taking advantage of their various skill levels. They have one player on their roster people would consider as an elite player in Donovan Mitchell the rest of the roster has highly skilled players with high basketball IQ’s
In the NBA they like to layer actions together to make it tough on the defense.
Some of the actions I am seeing a lot of our:
Ghost Screens into a Veer Pin Down
Iverson cuts into Step up
Ball Screens into Stagger away
DHO into Double Ball Screens
Step Up ball screens into Flares
Let’s dive in and look at some of the actions that Utah Jazz layers together to create great scoring opportunities.
In this set Utah layers the following concepts:
Iverson Cut with a flare screen
Step Up Ball Screen
Double Staggered Flare
The next play is layering a ghost cut with a veer screen where you fake a ball screen then veer and set a pin down as the ball handler is coming off the ghost action. This action is very difficult for teams that like to play drop coverage on the ball screener.
The final set from the Utah Jazz we take a look at today layers the following actions
Iverson with Flare Screen
UCLA Cut into a Pin-Down
Be on the lookout for a deep dive video and animated playbook with pdf diagrams that I am putting together on the Utah Jazz.
I will be giving you a sneak peek of some of their sets on my Twitter account
