What is the Peel Switch Defense?
What is the Peel Switch?
A "Peel Switch" is described as "when a defender gets defeated on dribble penetration, the nearest help defender switches onto the ball as the beaten defender "peels off" and switches to another player." It also entails the other defenders moving to their next switch if necessary.
It's a strategy meant to avoid having "two on the ball." When a player gets beaten off the dribble and the next defender rushes to aid, there is sometimes a brief period of "2 on the ball" while the initial defender recovers and returns to their man. The "Peel Switch" is intended to alleviate this problem and keep everyone in sync.
The Peel Switch was made famous by Will Voigt of the Angola National team.
This Sunday I have Coach Paul Kelleher from the Ireland 18-u team coming to discuss this defensive concept that he used with his Ireland 18-U team.
As a high school coach, I am excited to have Coach Kelleher come and discuss how he used it with this age group.
