Why do we Coach?
Wins matter.
Championships matter.
Developing better basketball players matters.
I’m competitive. After 30 years of coaching, I still want to win every game we play.
But every once in a while, something happens that reminds you that the biggest wins in coaching usually don’t show up on the scoreboard.
This week, I received a testimonial from the father of one of my players, Jawel Pummarachai.
There was one part that really stuck with me.
When I started coaching Jawel, I wanted her to have the confidence to shoot the basketball.
Don’t worry about missing.
Don’t look at the bench.
If you’re open and it’s your shot, take it.
Over the last two years, I’ve watched that confidence grow.
But reading her dad’s words reminded me that maybe it became about more than making shots.
And that is why we coach.
They Probably Won’t Remember the Score
I believe winning matters.
I believe in standards, accountability, hard work and competing.
But years from now, our players probably won’t remember the score of some random game on a Tuesday night.
They’ll remember whether we believed in them.
They’ll remember whether we built their confidence or took it away.
They’ll remember whether we cared about them when they were struggling.
They’ll remember their teammates, the bus rides, the big games and the relationships.
Most importantly, they’ll remember how being part of our program made them feel.
Basketball Is the Vehicle
That brings me back to something I believe more today than I probably did when I started coaching:
Basketball is the vehicle.
Yes, we teach shooting, spacing, defense, offense and all the X’s and O’s.
But we’re also teaching young people to make decisions.
To communicate.
To compete.
To handle adversity.
To be a good teammate.
To believe in themselves.
Those lessons can last a lot longer than their basketball careers.
And that realization has helped shape where I want to take System Basketball next.
From Helping Coaches to Helping Players
For years, one of the main missions of System Basketball has been:
Helping Coaches Build Better Systems.
That isn’t changing.
But now I want to take the same philosophy we teach coaches and bring it directly to young players.
That’s why we’re beginning to build a K–12 girls basketball organization here in Southern California.
Our mission on the player side is just as simple:
Helping Players Make Better Decisions.
For the youngest girls, I want to help them learn the game, develop basic skills and fall in love with basketball.
As they get older, we’ll focus more on skill development, decision-making and learning how to actually play the game — not just memorize plays.
Then we’ll provide competitive opportunities through our junior-high and high-school travel programs.
Our high-school System Basketball Select program is building toward Spring 2027, and we already have several girls committed to what we’re building — including one player from Italy.
I’m excited about where this can go.
But I don’t want the goal to simply be creating another travel-ball organization.
I want to create an environment where girls become better basketball players, better decision-makers and more confident young women.
And maybe years from now, another parent sends one of our coaches a message like the one Jawel’s dad sent me.
That would be a pretty good measure of whether we built this thing the right way.
That’s Why We Coach
As another school year begins and another basketball season gets closer, Jawel’s dad gave me a reminder I probably needed.
The wins are great.
The championships are great.
But the relationships and the impact are the legacy.
That’s why we coach.
So coaches, I’d love to hear from you:
Why do you coach?
Leave a comment and let me know.
And coaches, let me know how I can help you build a better system for your players, your team and your program.
If you know a girl or young lady who might be a good fit for what we’re building with System Basketball, reach out to me about that too.
We’re just getting started.
